Registration Requirements:
Participants must have experience in facilitating workshops and must have participated in personal Cultural Awareness Training.
Participation:
Open to Montgomery County residents working in nonprofits, educators, mental health and social services professionals, faith based organizations, human resource and other County government administrators at no cost. We are looking to train 20 participants and recommend two (2) applications per organization.
Overview:
The influx of African immigrants in Montgomery County is a reality and it comes with complex cultural challenges. In order to interact with this diverse population, The African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation (AIRF) has developed African Cultural Competency material to train trainers who will be provided with skills to help them interact effectively with African Cultural differences in our ever changing increasingly diverse society.
Purpose:
The purpose of this workshop training is to enhance communication, understanding and respect among diverse groups and to enable the participants to develop, deliver and facilitate an African Cultural Sensitivity Workshop in their workplace. In addition to Developing Awareness to Africa and its diverse Cultures; developing Cultural Sensitivity to difference and stereotypes; and developing Skills of interaction with African, our diverse professionals will provide a wide range of beliefs and values and how they interact with mainstream American Culture and other immigrant cultures. Our diverse and expansive frameworks which will combine didactic, experiential teaching techniques, exercises, mock training, debriefs and coaching, will provide our participants with increased knowledge, and skills for four days of interaction and fun.
Facilitators:
- First day: Developing African Cultural Competency Wanjiru Kamau, Ed. D.
- President African immigrant & Refugee Foundation.
- Second Day: Crossing Borders- Building Relationships Across Lines of Difference – David Thurston, Casa de Maryland.
- Third Day: Race Awareness Accountability and Action- Laura White, Multicultural Training Specialist Montgomery College.
- Fourth Day: Training the trainers Mocks – All facilitators.
