PRIZE WITH A PURPOSE … Wanjiru Kamau, founder of the African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation (AIRF) that helps immigrants with a variety of needs as they adjust to life in America, was honored by the Montgomery County Council on Nov. 15 after she named one of five national winners of a $100,000 “Purpose Prize.” Financed by the Atlantic Philanthropies and John Templeton Foundation, the award is sponsored by Civic Ventures, a San Francisco think tank that honors age 60-plus Americans for innovative efforts to solve society's most pressing problems. Since the founding of AIRF in 2000, Dr. Kamau’s foundation has helped more than 6,000 immigrants from 45 countries. Dr. Kamau (speaking) talked of those her program has helped as she was joined by long-time supporters Councilmember Nancy Navarro (to her left) and Council President Valerie Ervin.
